Punarnava is an herb that has derived its name from hindi words meaning “again” and “new”. This means the herb is capable of renewing the body and rejuvenating the system. In English, it’s known as “spreading hogweed”. This herb is green in color and leafy in nature, which grows to a length of two to three feet. The leaves of this herb are nice and plump, circular and possess tiny hair kind of growths. In rainy season, this herb produces flowers, which are pink or white in color. The root of this herb is thick, hard and slightly white in color.

Purnarnava is sweet, astringent and pungent tasting. It is rough, light and very hot. The main element in punarnava is an alkaloid known as punarnavine.

Ayurvedic physicians widely use punarnava due to its beneficial properties. Researchers have also observed that this herb has anti-oxidant qualities. Apart from this, punarnava is also suggested as an immune booster. Recent research has shown the efficacy of punarnava in issues like jaundice, constipation and malaria. Because of its increased diuretic quality, this herb is even effective for recovery from inflammation.

In several other texts in Ayurveda, punarnava is known to possess qualities like decreased alopecia, litholytic, and giving relief from edema and improving dysuria.

As per Siddha medicine, this herb is capable of bringing about rebirth even in a condition as serious as a deadly illness. As per siddha medicine, the herb punarava is categorized as a diuretic, anti-inflammatory, hepato protective, laxative, expectorant and anthemintic.

Studies have observed that punarnava contains potassium nitrate apart from the alkaloid punarnavine. The extract of the plant also consists of ursolic acid. The stem comprises of fifteen amino acids inclusive of 6 amino acids that are essential, the root consists of fourteen amino acids inclusive of 7 that are quite essential. Early studies have observed the positive effects of this herb as a diuretic. This effect was found prominent in cases like liver cirrhosis. This was associated with punarnavine that showed an increase in urination and blood pressure.

The plant contains boeravinones E, D, C, B and A, flavones, sterol, rotenoids and punarnavoside. Research has shown that Punarnavoside has antifibrinolytic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and diuretic properties. The extract of the root has two significant lignans – syringaresinol Mono β D glucoside and liriodendrin, the latter has considerable calcium channel blocking property. The calcium channel blockers relax the muscle cells, which reduces the muscle spasms. Besides lowering blood pressure, they also relax the blood vessels and due to this property, it is considered useful for cardiovascular disorders.  Also, the rotenoid compounds are studied for spasmolytic action on the gastrointestinal-tract.

Effectiveness of the drug in nephritic syndromes, renal diseases and inflammation is also demonstrated by various studies.  The study involving fifteen patients suffering from nephritic syndrome were treated with a decoction of punarnava. Six of the patients responded well and they were completely symptom-free. They showed minimal histopathological and albuminuria transformation in the kidney. The other 7 patients showed relief in the symptoms. However, there was massive urinary sediments and albumin urea present. One patient did not show any improvement even after 2-3 weeks of treatment.

The herb is being researched extensively with findings backing its traditional uses. The studies have confirmed that punarnavoside is anti-fibrinolytic, anti-convulsant, diuretic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. Studies on the Indigenious Indian Punarnava have demonstrated the usefulness of the herb in treating entamoeba hisolytica. The aqueous extract along with the alkaloid fraction considerably inhibited the enhanced serum aminotransferase similar to hydrocortisone in the arthritic animals.

The root of this herbal plant is considered beneficial for several skin ailments. The root paste is applied as dressing on edematous swelling. The hot poultice prepared from the root is used for abscesses, ulcers and other such skin diseases.

The root is also recommended in Ayurveda for diseases such as gonorrhea, heart and kidney. The tender shoots of the plant is used as a vegetable. Punarnava is highly effective for obesity. Almost all the anti-obesity herbal formulations contain this herb. It is also recommended in the traditional medicine for dropsy. The freshly prepared herb is used by Ayurvedic physicians to aid recovery. The liquid extract is given in the dosage of 4 – 6 grams. The antiedema property is quite beneficial in conditions like congestive heart failure.
