Research

Research to alleviate digestive disorders:

Ginger helps in alleviating gastrointestinal disorders through various mechanisms. It contains compounds with cholinergic and spasmogenic properties, which are responsible for the prokinetic activity of ginger. Hence, ginger, according to studies, helps in providing relief from diarrhea and colic. (Ghayur MN et al. “Pharmacological basis for the medicinal use of ginger in gastrointestinal disorders.” Digestive Diseases and Sciences. 2005 Oct). The active constituents of ginger, gingerols and shogoals also help in improving gastrodueodenal motility, which is one of key reasons why ginger helps in reducing nausea and vomiting. (Pertz HH et al. “Effects of ginger constituents on the gastrointestinal tract: role of cholinergic M3 and serotonergic 5-HT3 and 5-HT4 receptors.” Planta Med. 2011 Jul). Furthermore, ginger stimulates secretion of saliva, which aids digestion. (Chamani G et al. “Evaluation of effects of Zingiber officinale on salivation in rats.” Acta Med Iran. 2011).

Research in reducing inflammation:

The anti-inflammatory components of ginger help in reducing pain and inflammation of joints. (Therkleson T. “Ginger Therapy for Osteoarthritis: A Typical Case.” J Holist Nurs. 2014 Jan). Apart from reducing the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, ginger helps in reducing risk of bone destruction.. (Al-Nahain A et al. “Zingiber officinale: A Potential Plant against Rheumatoid Arthritis.” Arthritis. 2014).

Research in reducing respiratory disorders:

Ginger is traditionally used for reducing cold, cough and asthma. According to experimental studies, ginger works by inhibiting activities of pro-inflammatory molecules that trigger inflammation of the airways. Ginger inhibits production of neutrophils and eosinophils and the IgE antibodies that trigger allergic asthma. (Khan AM et al. “Zingiber officinale ameliorates allergic asthma via suppression of Th2-mediated immune response.” Pharm Biol. 2015 Mar).

Research in Neuroprotective property:

Ginger contains anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and memory enhancing compound that helps in improving cognitive health. Studies suggest that ginger is beneficial for people who have a higher risk of cognitive dysfunction and dementia. (Moon M et al. “6-Shogaol, an active constituent of ginger, attenuates neuroinflammation and cognitive deficits in animal models of dementia.” Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 2014 Jun).

Research in reducing elevated sugar level:

Ginger helps in reducing the blood sugar level in type 2 diabetes patients. It works by reducing the inflammatory markers that increase insulin resistance. By improving insulin sensitivity, ginger helps in diabetes control. (Arablou T et al. “The effect of ginger consumption on glycemic status, lipid profile and some inflammatory markers in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.” Int J Food Sci Nutr. 2014 Jun).

Research in improving cardiovascular function:

Scientists have identified a novel compound in ginger called 6-gingerol that helps in improving the function of the heart. It helps in reducing the elevated blood pressure level and improves circulation. (Liu Q et al. “6-gingerol: a novel AT1 antagonist for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.” Planta Med. 2013 Mar).
