Louse or lice (plural) is/are wingless miniscule bloodsucking insects that live or rather grow among the human hair. They feed on the small amount of blood that they suck out from your scalp which is irritating, itching and even painful at times. It is usually seen among small children who contract it from their class mates through the direct contact with the head of the opposite party.
These tiny creatures are transferrable in nature and annoying and at times even tough to remove them. You can contract lice by coming into close contact with an infected person or using the comb or unwashed clothes of the infected person. The most common symptoms are itchy scalp and red bumps on it. To get rid of the embarrassment or to save you from the ostracisation caused by these creatures, here are some home remedies.
If you at the initial stage of the infestation then oil treatment is sufficient to get rid of lice. Use oil like coconut, sesame or whatever is available. Detangle your hair and apply sufficient amount of oil on to your hair. Once oiling is done comb your hair with the comb running through the scalp touching it. Shampoo your hair and leave the shampoo for some time. Rinse. Then comb your hair the same way as mentioned above while it is still wet. Repeat the procedure frequently till the problem cures.
The smell that the garlic contains is useful in suffocating the lice which ultimately kills them. Take a few garlic cloves say about 9 or 10 and grind them to form a paste. In the paste mix 2 to 3 teaspoons of fresh lime juice. Apply the mask on to the scalp and leave it there for some time and then rinse thoroughly using warm water. Alternatively even you can make a mixture of garlic paste combined with some cooking oil, fresh lemon juice, shampoo, conditioner and also green tea. Apply the mask on to your hair thoroughly and cover your head using a shower cap or a towel can also serve the purpose. Leave it as it is for about half an hour. Wash your hair with a shampoo that you use regularly. Repeat the procedure every week till the infestation is cured.
Salt contains desiccation properties which can be helpful in removing the infestation of lice. Make a solution by combining one half cup of salt and the same proportion of vinegar. Mix the two thoroughly. Spray the solution on to your hair till it becomes slightly wet. Cover your hair with a shower cap or a towel. Leave it as it is for about one and a half or two hours. Wash off and properly condition your hair. Repeat the exercise after every 3 days to get the desired result.
Olive oil is an effective smother that is useful to kill lice. Apply olive oil on to your hair sufficiently before you go to your bed. Put on a clean towel or shower cap so that the oil stays on to your hair the whole night. When you wake up comb the hair such that the comb closely touches the scalp. Rinse of the oil using an herbal shampoo or even the medicated shampoos. Alternatively you can mix half a cup of olive oil with half a cup of conditioner and even you can additionally add liquid soap (optional). Apply the solution to your hair and leave it for some time. Rinse off and apply conditioner. Comb thoroughly so as to remove the dead bodies of the lice. Repeat if required.
Petroleum jelly has the sticking property which hold back the lice not allowing it to move. Apply sufficiently a layer of petroleum jelly to the scalp before you go to sleep. Cover your hair with a shower cap or a clean towel. Once you wake up use baby oil to remove the layer. Comb the hair thoroughly to remove the dead lice. Repeat as per requirement.
Commonly known as tulsi in India. Basil has got that magical thing which removes the lice as they cannot stand the basil juice. Grind basil/tulsi leaves to squeeze out the juice. Apply the juice all over the scalp generously. Wash off. Comb thoroughly to remove the dead lice.
Vinegar has properties that can dissolve the bodies of the dead lice and the nits. After washing your hair with shampoo, rinse again using the solution containing one quarter bucket of water and same quantity of vinegar. Vigorously rub it and then rinse with normal water to get rid of the bad odour.
