Prickly heat or heat rashes are painful and irritating skin condition that causes unbearable itching. The scorching heat of the sun, excessive sweating and hot humid weather condition causes tiny reddish itchy rashes on the skin. Though prickly heat is not a serious condition, but it is a very uncomfortable and needs to be treated immediately. Prickly heat can appear in any part of your body, but usually it appears on the back, neck, feet, abdomen, groin, and upper chest.
Home Remedies For Prickly Heat
Though there are numbers of over the counter medications, creams, lotions and talc available to treat prickly heat, but they just give temporary relief. Home remedies are not only cheaper alternatives, but they also provide permanent relief from these itchy rashes. Apply these time-tested home remedies to soothe your skin irritation.
Oatmeal bath is one of the most effective remedies for prickly heat because of its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties. Oatmeal bath will bring instant relief from itching and irritation caused by heat rashes. Add 1 cup of oatmeal powder in your bath water. Soak your body in this water for at least half an hour. Repeat for 2-3 days to get complete relief.
Aloe Vera Gel
The cooling effect of aloe Vera gel and it great healing properties makes it an excellent remedy for prickly heat. Application of fresh aloe Vera gel on the affected part directly after extracting the gel from the leaf of an aloe Vera plant can bring relief from itching, irritation and inflammation of the skin and kill the bacteria. After rubbing gel on affected part, wait for 15-20 minutes to let it work and then take a bath. Within 2-3 days, prickly heat will completely disappear.
The hydrating and cooling effect of cucumber can bring relief from itching and irritation caused by prickly heat. Grate a cucumber and make paste. Apply this paste on the rashes and leave for 10-15 minutes. Wash off with cold water. The water content of cucumber will hydrate and cool the skin and bring relief from itchiness and inflammation.
Sandalwood has great soothing effect on the skin. It has been used for centuries to treat any kind of rashes. Make a thick paste of sandalwood powder after adding rose water and apply on the rashes and leave for 20 minutes. Wash off with cold water. After 2-3 application, prickly heat will be eliminated completely.
The burning sensation from prickly heat is really unbearable. To get rid of his uncomfortable condition, apply cold compress on the rashes. It will not only cool the skin but will also reduce inflammation and itching instantly. Wrap ice cubes in a clean cloth and apply on the affected areas 2-3 times a day.
Baking soda works as great exfoliating agent to remove dead skin cells, dirt and other impurities and unclog the pores, which is one of the main reasons for occurrence of prickly heat. Make a paste of baking soda with water; and apply on the rashes. Wait for 5-10 minutes and wipe using a damp wash cloth. This treatment will reduce inflammation, itching and irritation.
Margosa or neem leaves contain antibacterial properties and are excellent remedy for treating heat rashes. The antiseptic properties of margosa leaves will kill the bacteria and anti-inflammatory properties will soothe skin and reduce inflammation. You will get quick relief from itching and irritation also. Make a paste by grinding some fresh neem leaves. Apply the paste on the affected parts and wait till it dries. Wash off with cold water. Repeat the treatment until the rashes disappears completely.
Fuller‘s earth or multani mitti is rich in minerals and medicinal properties that can be used to get relief from itching an inflammation associated with prickly heat. Take 2 tbsp of fuller earth and make paste by adding rose water or normal water, apply on the rashes. Wait till it dries and wash off with cold water. After 2-3 applications, you will get complete relief.
Grind 2 tbsp cumin seeds and make a paste by adding 1 tsp coconut oil. Apply the paste on the rashes. Leave it on your skin as long as you can and then wash off with cold water. Itching and irritation will vanish complete after 2-3 applications.
Cornstarch is another effective treatment for prickly heat. Make a smooth paste by adding water and apply on the affected area. Allow it to dry and then rinse off with cold water. By soothing the skin, it will bring relief from inflammation and itching.
Take some precautionary measures to avoid getting prickly heat. Like instead of wearing synthetic clothes which tend to trap sweat, wear cotton and loose fitting clothes, drink plenty of water and take bath in cold water to keep your body cool.
