Gokshura herb is generally found in sub-Himalayan forests of India, Burma, and various other countries. A short crooked tree with relentless fruit in the winters: common in all forests, regularly found in villages and worshipped by the Hindus during the Dasara festival.
As per Ayurvedic traditions, Gokshura or tribulus is a fantastic healing Ayurvedic herb with a broad range of actions, lately becoming very popular in Western herbalism under the common name " Puncture Vine" and the curtailed Latin name Tribulus terrestris, where it is used for its established ability to augment Luteal Hormone in men as well as in women, leading to raised testosterone levels.
Gokshura or tribulus is also a sex and mood enhancer that stimulates the manufacture of the Luteinizing Hormone (LH). When LH or Luteinizing Hormone levels are high, the natural production of testosterone also increases. LH or Luteinizing Hormone is a hormone that is also responsible for increasing sex drive and virility. Laboratory studies have found that Gokshura or tribulus raises sperm count after being taken for 1 month and can result in better than 50 percent increase in testosterone levels. This herb also has a inspiring effect on the liver by helping to switch cholesterol and fats into hormones and energy. When this action is united with the increase in testosterone levels that promote protein synthesis, positive nitrogen balance as well as faster recuperation and recovery from muscular stress, Gokshura or tribulus has a tremendous positive impact on strength and stamina.
Research I - Gynaecomastia and the plant product "Tribulis terrestris or gokshura".
By Jameel JK, Kneeshaw PJ, Rao VS, Drew PJ.
Research was conducted at Academic Surgical Unit, Castle Hill Hospital, University of Hull, Cottingham, East Yorkshire, UK. Gynaecomastia is the commonest benign breast condition seen in males. It is well recognized that certain drugs that alter the normal sex hormonal profile in the body can encourage gynaecomastia. Lately, an escalating use of androgenic anabolic steroids among young males particularly body builders has increased the occurrence of gynaecomastia. We report a case of a young weight trainer who developed gynaecomastia due to oral intake of an herbal tablet that he used as a steroid substitute for body building.
Reseach II - The effect of five weeks of Tribulus terrestris or gokshura supplementation on muscle strength and body composition during preseason training in elite rugby league players.
By J Strength, Rogerson S, Riches CJ, Jennings C, Weatherby RP, Meir RA, Marshall-Gradisnik SM.
Research was conducted at School of Exercise Science and Sport Management, Southern Cross University Lismore, New South Wales, Australia. The reason of the study was to determine the effect of Tribulus or gokshura on strength, fat free mass, and the urinary testosterone or epitestosterone ratio during five weeks of preseason training in elite rugby league players. 22 Australian elite male rugby league players were match paired and arbitrarily assigned in a double-blind manner to either a Tribulus or placebo group. All subjects performed structured heavy resistance training as part of the club's preseason preparations. A Tribulus terrestris extract (450 mg daily) or placebo capsule was consumed once daily for five weeks. After five weeks of training, strength and fat free mass increased considerably without any difference between those who took placebo or those taking Tribulus extract. No between-group differences were noted in the urinary testosterone or epitestosterone ratio .
Research III - Experimental study of saponins from Tribulus or gokshura on renal carcinoma cell line
By Zhongguo Zhong Yao Za Zhi.
To investigate the effect of saponins from Tribulus or gokshura on the renal carcinoma cell (786-0) invitro, and inhibitory mechanisms. Effects of SIT on the cyto-toxicity, morphological changes of apoptosis, cell cycle and expression of Bcl-2 protein in the 786-0 were tested correspondingly by MTT method, Wright and acridine orange stain assay, as well as flow cytometry (FCM). After the 786-0 was treated by STY, it was shown that:
1) A noteworthy cytotoxic effect was observed by MTT assay;
2) Apoptosis-induced was viewed by Wright and acridine orange stain assay;
3) The distribution of 786-0 on S phase was increased;
4.) The expression of Bcl-2 protein and cyclin D1 was decreased. Saponins from tribulus terrestris can considerably inhibit the growth of 786-0 in-vitro, partly, by apoptosis.
