A cornerstone of the Ayurvedic tradition, neem was known as sarva roga nivarin or "healer of all ailments" in prehistoric India. Today, in tropical regions around the world, neem is often called "the village pharmacy. Its principle constituents are nimbin, nimbinin and nimbidin.
It is used for external applications in skin diseases. Neem extracts possess antidiabetic, antibacterial and antiviral properties. The tree stem, root and bark possess astringent, tonic and antiperiodic properties. The bark is beneficial in fever and useful in cutaneous diseases. Neem's traditional use is based on its detoxifying benefits that help maintain healthy circulatory, digestive, respiratory and urinary systems. It is used for external applications in skin diseases. All parts of the plant yield b-sitosterol.

Neem's function as a fungicide depends on the compounds gedunin and nimbidol in its leaf. After almost 4,500 years of almost continuous use, even the Indian equivalent of the FDA apparently believes that "anything from neem has to be good" (Larson, 1993)

There is plenty of scientific backup for Neem's immune enhancement properties as a booster of the macrophage's effectiveness. Scientific studies indicate that Neem boosts the immune system by energizing lymphocytes cells to respond to infection and other challenges to the body's immunity. Clinical trials were conducted on 9 patients of congestive heart failure with anasarca to study the diuretic effect of sodium nimbidinate. 250mg were administered daily by deep intra-muscular injection in the gluteal region. The injections were repeated for 2-13 days with an average of about 5 injections per patient. Four other patients were also studied as controls on the same lines with bed rest, low sodium diet and adequate digitalization without any diuretic. Eight of the patients showed a definite diuretic response. The control group did not show any diuresis. No toxic reaction was noted except local discomfort or slight pain. Clinical trials were conducted on 12 cases of congestive cardiac failure with sodium nimbidinate for diuretic activity. Encouraging diuretic activity was observed with good response in 4 cases. There was no significant toxicity.
Neem's role as a wonder drug is traced as far back as 4500 years ago. The benefits of neem are listed in the ancient documents Caraka-Samhita and Susruta Samhita, the books at the foundation of the Indian system of natural treatment, ayurveda.
Traditionally, Neem preparation has been used for acne. Studies done at King George Medical College in Lucknow, India have found that Neem inhibits Propionibacterium acnes, an anaerobic pathogen, which plays a major role in pathogenesis of acne. Neem stops the inflammatory mediators leading to acne. I have seen Neem work through personal experiences as well. My wife developed a case of severe acne after our marriage. After taking Neem, one capsule three times per day for forty days, her acne completely disappeared. In my practice, I regularly treat patients with acne prone skin with great success.
Neem has been called the best product currently available for treating psoriasis. It protects the skin while it helps heal lesions, removes scaling, and soothes irritation. Experiments and reports from patients with psoriasis have shown taking neem leaf orally combined with topical treatment with neem-based creams or extracts appear to be at least as effective as coal tar and cortisone in treating psoriasis.
Much like psoriasis, neem's multiple actions seem to clear up eczema more effectively than prescription products. There have been many reports from parents who say that their child was plagued by eczema until they tried Neem, generally as a last resort or before trying a course of steroids. To relieve the intense itching and reddening of eczema, take Morpheme Neem Leaf Capsules twice a day until the symptoms disappear.
Along with its many uses, Neem is also used to improve resistance to diseases in Ayurvedic science. It cleanses the blood and stimulates the antibodies production, thereby strengthening the immune system.
Skin Conditions
Neem has an almost magical effect on chronic skin conditions that fail to respond to conventional treatments. Acne, psoriasis, eczema, and ringworm are conditions that are effectively treated by a Neem preparation.
Hair and Nails
Scalp conditions like dandruff, scaling and even hair loss improve with Neem products. Yellow or brittle nails, caused by the presence of yeast or fungi, are normalised by the use of Neem.
Teeth and Gums
Neem mouth rinse is very effective in the treatment of infections, tooth decay, bleeding and sore gums. A mouthwash, using Neem oil, has been used at my
practice for the treatment of mouth ulcers.
Diabetes
Neem has been found to reduce insulin requirements by up to 50% for diabetics, without altering blood glucose levels.
Heart and Blood
A recent study showed that a Neem treatment lowered high cholesterol levels. It has also been tested, with good results, for other heart conditions.
Insects
Neem is a very effective insect repellent, without being toxic to pets and humans.
