Cellulite is defined as the fat deposits under the skin that outwardly give the skin a dimpled, or orange-peel like appearance. Cellulite is most often seen in women because the fat is arranged in large chambers separated by columns of collagen fibers.
It is more common in overweight people. Factors such as hormones, pregnancy, and aging contribute to the weakening of the collagen fibers and formation of cellulite under the skin. A good supply of nutrients and oxygen in the blood supply keeps the fatty tissue well nourished, and a good drainage system by the veins and the lymph vessels constantly removes waste products. Normal fatty tissue is smooth, well nourished and free from toxins and excess fluid.
Certain factors can affect the blood supply to and drainage from the fatty tissues, making them devoid of oxygen and nutrients and allowing the build-up of toxins and fluid. What develops is cellulite areas of fatty tissue interspersed with tethering fibers and thick fluid, familiar to most of us as the lumpy, bumpy areas on the legs, thighs tummies and buttocks.
Cellulite is not a disease, but a common condition appearing in over 90% of women after puberty, predominantly affecting areas of the hips, thighs, buttocks, tummies and backs of the arms. Cellulite is the body's emergency store of body fat, but its ugly, unsightly and unwanted appearance makes one conscious.
It is also seen in men but less often. Women tend to store fat on their lower halves of their body’s such as the hips, thighs, buttocks and backs of the arms. Women are more prone to poor circulation and fluid retention. As cellulite develops in fatty tissue, the more fatty tissue we have, the more cellulite we may develop. Common symptoms are cold hands and cold feet. Swollen feet and swollen ankles especially in the heat and after standing are the most common symptoms of fluid retention.
Some of the common causes of cellulite are: Chronic Overeating, Too Little Exercise, Under-Active Thyroid Hormone and Intolerance to Common Foods
Some of the causes of poor drainage either by the veins or the lymph system are…
1. Broken, Weak, Varicose Veins
2. Inherited Weakness of the Veins
3. Poor Lymph System Drainage or Disease to the Delicate Lymph Vessels
4. Poor Lymph System Inherited Weakness
5. Stress / Anxiety
