Gout is the most common form of arthritis (joint inflammation). It is known as vata rakta in ayurveda. It appears as an acute attack often coming overnight. Gout or vata rakta is a systemic disease that is, it occurs through out the body, which is caused by building of uric acid in joints. According to ayurveda gout is caused due to inharmony between vata and rakta in body. . It is more common in males who are in Middle Ages i.e. between 35- 50 years. Females are at greater risk after menopause.
Gout usually affects the first metatarsal phalangeal joint of big toe (hallux) or the ankle joint. Gout may appear as a sudden attack. It generally follows the following four stages.
Asymptomatic phase – Urate level rises in blood with no symptoms appearing in the body. It is a quite phase in which the causative factor (urates) starts accumulating in body.
Acute phase – In this stage, attack starts suddenly in night. Joint and its surrounding tissue become hot, red, shiny, painful and swollen. Mild fever may also accompany this stage. If no proper treatment is taken at this stage the condition of the patient itself starts improving within 2-3 weeks of the attack.
Intercritical stage – It is again a symptom less stage and may last for years.
Chronic stage – In this persistent pain in joint occurs with deposition of urates in joint. Tophi appear, which is a firm, nodular or fusiform swelling. In inflamed tophi the overlying skin may be erythamatous and may release white pus. Joint stiffness is present and movement of joint may also get restricted.
