A very common disease now a days, called madhumeh or ojomeh in ayurvedic terminology, is a condition in which glucose (can be compared to oja by its energy providing property) level in blood becomes elevated which is accompanied by urine during excretion. This condition occurs due to partial or complete lack of insulin, produced by beta cells in islet of langerhans present in pancreas. Insulin is a protein that plays a major role in glucose metabolism.
According to ayurveda diabetes mellitus happens when, Vata which is ruksh (dry) and kashaya (astringent) in nature carries oja (essence of a product after digestion), which is madhur (sweet) in nature, to mutrashay (bladder) hence this oja comes out of mutra (urine) causing madhumeh or ojomeh.
This disease is quite common in overweight and middle-aged people and people who have less physical activities in their life style.
Classified into two types
