As there are three doshas, which are required for physical well, being similarly there are three manas gunnas (factors which control mind or the vital energies) these are Satwa, Rajas and Tamma. Any mental disorders are caused by imbalance in manas (mind) doshas which are two i.e. rajas and Tamma. These imbalances occur when three purusharth (three essential facts) of life becomes disturbed.

These purusharth are:

  1. Dharma (religion and social duties)
  2. Arth (money for personal and social well being)
  3. Kama (family and personal desires)

When a person is unable to achieve these goals in life, his manas doshas i.e. rajas and tammas gets disturbed and their harmony in mind gets imbalanced. Due to this disturbance manas doshas over power the Satwa gunna of mind, which maintains mental piece and calmness, there by leads to mental disturbance.

Depression is now day’s very common term used. In ayurvedic terminology it is called vishad. It is the mental imbalance of the mind, which leads to unpleasant and irritable behavior. Treating depression is tougher than treating physical disorders.


SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION

  1. Paleness and dullness of face appearance
  2. Person in depression may be excessively talkative or may be very quite
  3. Person likes loneliness and loves to be alone
  4. Lack of concentration
  5. Mood swings are quite common
  6. Person is irritated and agitating all the time
  7. Uninterested attitude toward work.
  8. Insomnia is a common site for these patients
  9. Decreased appetite with indigestion and constipation.
  10. Feeling of unworthiness of his life
  11. These feelings occur more in day time then in night
  12. Voice is low and speaks slowly interruptedly.
  13. Typical physical appearances like drooping down of shoulders and person walks slowly.
  14. Person may feel physically weak and his blood pressure might be low.
  15. Low sexual drive is quite common.

CAUSES OF DEPRESSION

  1. Depression can occur after a prolong periods of over burdening and stressful work
  2. Unachivement of something may contribute to factors related to depression
  3. Unsatisfaction regarding factors likes money, family, sex etc.
  4. Over administration of drugs which are anti depressant.
  5. Jealously is another factor that promotes depression.
  6. Hereditary factor is also a major contributor to cause depression.

ADVISE FOR DEPRESSION

  1. Person should be involved in religious activities
  2. Astrological sciences should be applied
  3. Change in working environment should be done
  4. A good pshycaterist should be consulted
  5. Cause of depression should be searched and should be resolved.
  6. His mind should be diverted from the misery with which he is facing depression.
  7. Over use of psychosomatic drugs should be avoided.
  8. Avoid excess of tea, coffee, tobacco and alcohol as it can be a contributing factor which aggravates depression
  9. Avoid heavy food stuff like meat, oily food etc

Home remedies for depression Treatment

  • Bhrami (Bacopa monniera), mulethi (Glycyrrhiza glabra), can be given separately or in combined form 5 gram twice daily with milk.
  • Sandal wood powder should be applied on forehead daily
  • Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) powder in milk is good for depression treatment.
