Acne commonly known, as pimples, spots or zits in common language are an inflammatory response of skin .It is the diseases, which affects the oil glands of the skin. Small pores called follicle in the skin connects to the oil glands present under the skin. Inside these follicles, oil carries dead skin cells to the surface of the skin. When there is some kind of blockage in the follicle acne grows out. In ayurvedic terminology it is known as yauvan pidika (as it generally occurs in teenagers or young people) or mukh dushika (as it generally affects face). It occurs due to imbalance in all the three doshas i.e. vata, pitta and kapha. Acne is not considered as a serious health threat but it is a serious problem for cosmetic reason. Acne generally affects a large percentage of humans at some stage or the other in life.
This condition commonly occurs in young people especially during puberty. It can also be related to hormonal imbalance in the body that eventually disappears as the age passes by. But there is no way to predict that how long the problem will continue. Even some middle-aged people have been found suffering with it.
Generally four types of acne are seen. These are: -
Blackheads – these are tiny dark colored blocked pores. The black of the blackheads is due to skin pigment and not dirt or dust as believed by many.
Whiteheads - these are small, firm bumps with a white center.
Pustules – it is a pus-filled spot with an obvious balloon of white pus, which may turn yellow as the spot begins to heal.
Nodules – these are hard lumps under the skin that can be very painful. These generally go deep into the skin and often cause scars. These are the most common type of spot found in very severe acne and they often run together in groups. When they heal, they may leave scars.
